Ancient Olive Tree, El Olivar
This is one of the ancient olive trees in El Olivar Park, San Isidro. The park protects a grove descended from the first olive trees planted in Lima in 1560 by Antonio de Ribera, a Spanish noble.
*The first three olive saplings* were smuggled from Seville, Spain. Only one survived the journey. From that single tree, the entire grove, originally covering a large estate, was cultivated.
These olive trees are now **National Cultural Heritage** (*Árbol Patrimonial del Perú*). The area was once a full olive farm, but as Lima expanded, the estate was preserved as this historic urban park. Many trees here are centuries old.
