Palm Penetrating a Banyan Canopy
The tree structure is eye-catching: a smaller palm towering above a substantial broadleaf tree canopy. This is a common sight in Guangzhou, but often for different reasons.
The broadleaf tree appears to be a large, mature **Banyan fig** (*Ficus microcarpa*), a crucial street tree in Southern China, known for its extensive canopy and the potential for aerial roots. Guangzhou's climate is ideal for them.
The tall, slender palm spiking out of the top is likely a **King Palm** (*Archontophoenix alexandrae*) or a similar, fast-growing species.
This peculiar arrangement is not a single grafted tree. The palm was planted (or perhaps grew spontaneously) very close to, or immediately adjacent to, the banyan. As the palm grew tall and slender, the banyan's canopy spread out around it. From this angle, the palm appears to be "wearing" the banyan as a lush skirt, creating a unique, two-tiered urban green space feature. It highlights the aggressive growth of tropical species in this humid, subtropical climate zone.
